ZIMBABWEAN MBIRA CONCERT: A JOURNEY WITH THE SPIRITS
SATURDAY DECEMBER 1st, 2007

Erica Azim plays a concert of traditional Shona mbira music of Zimbabwe at MUCID (the Mahea Uchiyama Center for International Dance), 729 Heinz Ave in Berkeley, at 8 pm Saturday, December 1st.

The metal keys of the mbira, plucked with two thumbs and one forefinger, create relaxing yet invigorating polyphony and polyrhythms. For over a thousand years, the mbira instrument and its repertoire of classic songs have been used in Zimbabwe to call family ancestors and powerful tribal guardian spirits to earth to help the living, in night-long to week-long ceremonies. Every time the mbira is played, it is considered a prayer to the ancestors, which will result in their protection of the living.

Erica Azim is the foremost mbira performer and recording artist in the U.S. She specializes in a meditative mbira style used for healing, as played on her CDs “Mbira Dreams” and “Mbira: Healing Music of Zimbabwe”.

Admission is $15 at the door. For more information, call (510) 548-6053.

The concert is co-sponsored by the non-profit organization MBIRA (www.mbira.org) and MUCID (www.mahea.com). MBIRA is a non-profit organization supporting 135 traditional musicians in Zimbabwe; CDs of these artists will be available at the show.

Where is your mountain? What is your river? How did you come here? These are the questions at the heart of A Walk by the Sea (Dancetera label) the long-awaited fourth CD by Mahealani Uchiyama. The Bay Area artist is known for her ethereal and lyrical performances which meld music and dance. Mahealani is an artist of African and Native American ancestry, and her new CD is a collection which speaks of Mahealani's search for the spiritual and cultural traditions of her ancestors.

A Walk by the Sea is a ceremony of thanksgiving, a celebration of community, and of finding home. The collection contains a message of healing and peace which transcends the obstacle of language difference.

Mahealani is a dancer, musician, composer, and kumuhula (instructor of hula and ori). She has performed in such venues as San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts, Te Papa Tongarewa (the National Museum of New Zealand, Aotearoa), and the Grand Heiva in Tahiti, French Polynesia. She has won numerous awards for excellence in traditional Hawaiian and Tahitian dance and music.

She writes, “Is the place where we were born the place were we belong? Is home a physical location, or is it the summation of our experiences? Is who we are what we look like, or is it what is inside of us? The search is the same for all of us. The experiences and the results vary from person to person.

Special guests include Hugh Humphrey, one of the Caribbean's most dynamic percussionists, Ashley Moore, a composer, performer, producer and recording engineer whose award-winning work can be heard on radio, television, theater and film, and Aaron Sencil a drummer, choreographer, costume designer, song writer, and artistic director for the award-winning dance company Hui Tama Nui.

In A Walk by the Sea, Mahealani sings in several languages and calls upon all of us to overlook the superficial differences which divide us, and instead, to celebrate our common humanity.

It is available on CD Baby, eBay, and mahea.com. It will soon appear on iTunes and Amazon.com

In the movie, Master Wang has a different face for every day and every town. Wearing an odd piece of headgear, Wang (Zhu Xu) can whip a colorful demon-style silk mask across his face within seconds, and then change that visage in an instant.

Actually, face changing is the highlight of Sichuan Opera; it is a magical art. Actors change more than 10 masks in less than 20 seconds! By raising the hand, swinging a sleeve or tossing the head, an actor uses different masks to show different emotions, expressing invisible and intangible feelings through visible and tangible masks. From green to blue, red, yellow, brown, black, dark and gold, these masks show fear, tension, relaxation, slyness, desperation, outrage, and so on.
I think the same can be applied to the people of those colonies near England where pride of performance in things like "the war" and "the Golden Victorian age" are still remembered with fondness, namely Wales, Scotland and home, sweet home, Northern Ireland.

To certain extent, this "English" trait still pervades in Englands oldest, and most troublesome, former colony. You'll find this attitude among every human being on the ENTIRE Irish Island. But run for cover if you suggest it to an Irishman!

Thoughts not completely coherent on this at the moment, (not like mine ever are) but a possible topic that occurs to me might be the significance of the "mashup" phenomenon (taking 2 or more popular songs and combining them into a new, yet strangely familiar, composition) both from its entertainement value perspective, (some of them are freakin' hilarious, or just downright surreal) the ethical / legal standpoint, (this has been covered before... fair use, 'electronic folk culture', etc.) the recycling/revitalizing of spent culture aspect of it where the uncool, forgotten and mundane are imbued with new life, new 'hip' status and (in some cases) new meaning (shades of Dada, collage, surrealism, etc?) and possibly (this a stretch but also an interesting bit to me, and perhaps the most relevant to Culturegroove) as a metaphor for other cross-pollination and cultural collisions we're currently seeing happening around us.

(whew! that was a mouthful)

There's a lot of shared ground with sampling, and I'm not sure in the big picture how distinct you could really say the two are, but the whole thing of resurrecting dead pop songs is something I found interesting.

Example: I have a mashup which pits the vocals from The Killers' "Somebody Told Me" against the music from The Clash's "Rock The Casbah", neither being songs I particularly cared for to begin with, but I find the results to be disorientingly enjoyable.

Would I have found this juxtaposition amusing if I had no prior knowledge of either song? No. Would I have enjoyed it on a musical level? I don't know.

There have also been mashups I've heard where I haven't got a clue what the originals are, so I can't 'get the joke' and it sounds just like another song to me. And other times I recognize bits and pieces, but can't pick out where everything was sourced from.

Anyhoo, like I said, some random thoughts... I'm not even sure I'm the one to write such a thing. At least not alone. Heh.

If anyone here has any suggestions or pieces for the mag, let me know. I'd like to have it out by the end of June, if possible.

theme: The Culture of Culture. - how do we live our lives today when we have the opportunity to pick our culture. what new 'cultures' have developed out of this? how does this effect us on a larger scale? what are the pros and cons?

i'd like to have at least one article, or perhaps a series of smaller ones. definately some appropriate links as well as media and event suggestions for this subject.

What do you know but cannot prove?

"When considering this question one has to remember the basis of the scientific method: formulating hypotheses that can be disproved. Those hypotheses that are not disproved are thought to be true until disproved. Since it is more glamorous for a scientist to formulate hypotheses than it is to spend years disproving existing ones from other scientists and that it is unlikely that someone will spend enough time and energy trying to disprove his/her own statements, our body of scientific knowledge is surely full of statements we believe to be true but will eventually be proved to be false.

So I turn the question around: What scientific ideas that have not been disproved, do you believe are false."
There's lots of information on the site about the sujects in each episode. Although it's a lot of hunting for archaeology, they talk alot about the culture around the sites as well as the culture that has survived until today. One of my favorite episodes is "The Lost Tribe of Israel" http://www.historychannel.com/diggingforthetruth/?page=eighthjournal .
